About

This Giving Tuesday, we invite you to help University of Michigan-Dearborn students embark on a life-changing journey—both abroad and within themselves. Professors Carmel Price and Natalie Sampson are leading a groundbreaking 2026 study abroad course, “Bicycle Urbanism,” designed to empower students to reimagine how cities can work for everyone.

This immersive program offers more than a traditional classroom experience. Students will travel from Southeastern Michigan to the heart of Scandinavia—visiting Copenhagen, Gothenburg, and Oslo—to study urban environments where bicycles are not just transportation, but also a tool for building inclusive, sustainable communities.

Through the lens of bicycling, students will explore critical issues like urban design, public health, sustainability, universal accessibility, transportation equity, and social policy. They will witness firsthand how deliberate planning and innovative policies can lead to healthier, more connected, and more accessible cities for all people, regardless of age or ability.

Our goal is to make this high-impact global learning opportunity accessible to every student, regardless of financial background. Study abroad is proven to enrich education, broaden perspectives, and foster leaders equipped to tackle the challenges of our rapidly changing world. Yet for many students, cost is a barrier.

This is where you come in. By supporting our campaign, you are opening doors for a diverse generation of Wolverines—ensuring that financial constraints do not determine who gets to have the transformative experience of studying urban sustainability and social justice abroad. Your gift can help provide scholarships, cover travel expenses, and ensure that all students, not just a privileged few, have the chance to participate.

Bicycling is not just about getting from place to place; it is about changing how we experience our cities and strengthening the fabric of our communities. This program is not just about making cities better for bikes, but making cities better with bikes.

Join us in creating a more inclusive, sustainable, and inspired future—one student, and one city, at a time. Make your impact this Giving Tuesday—help our students see the world, and bring home the tools to change it.
