About

Dr. Timothy R.B. Johnson was a visionary physician, educator, and global health leader whose tireless dedication advanced maternal health, medical education, and health equity worldwide.

A proud U-M alumnus, Dr. Timothy R.B. Johnson returned to Ann Arbor in 1993 to lead the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology as the Bates Professor of Diseases of Women and Children. During his 24-year tenure as chair, he helped propel the department to national prominence — tripling faculty size and research output and achieving a top-three national ranking.

His commitment to interdisciplinary teaching was reflected in his roles as an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, professor of women’s studies, and research professor at the Center for Human Growth and Development, where he collaborated across departments, schools, and centers to strengthen global women’s health.

Dr. Johnson’s influence extended far beyond Michigan, resonating across continents. In the mid-1980s, he recognized the crisis of maternal and newborn mortality in Ghana due to a critical shortage of trained obstetricians. Understanding the global inequities perpetuating this crisis, Dr. Johnson led the design and launch of Ghana’s first in-country OB-GYN residency program.

By investing in local capacity rather than relying on overseas training — which rarely resulted in return — he and his partners helped create a pipeline of skilled specialists who now serve in Ghana’s hospitals, medical schools, and health ministries. This pioneering program stands as a gold standard for sustainable and ethical global health partnerships.

Through his leadership and vision, Dr. Johnson shaped global health training at U-M and influenced health system strengthening efforts across sub-Saharan Africa and beyond. As an adviser and champion at the U-M Center for Global Health Equity, Dr. Johnson advocated deeply for equitable, partnership-based engagement, setting an enduring example for all of us.

To honor Dr. Johnson’s remarkable impact and continue his life’s work, we are proud to announce the establishment of the Timothy R.B. Johnson OBGYN Global Health Fund in the Michigan Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Inspired by the legacy of Dr. Timothy R.B. Johnson, whose partnership, leadership, and vision helped advance women’s health worldwide, gifts to this fund will be used to support the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology’s collaboration with developing countries in their efforts to educate medical professionals and learners to advance women’s health. The Fund will support education, research, and training opportunities for learners from both Michigan Medicine and partner countries ensuring that his legacy of compassion and excellence lives on in Michigan, Ghana, and around the world.

We invite you to join us in advancing Dr. Johnson’s vision by making a gift on Giving Blueday!
