About

Cellular and Molecular Biology at University of Michigan is an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in the medical school with faculty from over 20 departments across U-M. This Giving Blueday, you can help support graduate student training, biomedical research, and program events that are essential to the biomedical Ph.D. student’s graduate experience.

Cellular and Molecular Biology (CMB) at the University of Michigan is a Ph.D. program in the medical school. It was the first interdisciplinary degree-granting graduate program in the sciences at the university, founded in 1971, and supported by a long-standing National Institutes of Health (NIH) training grant. CMB is a program, rather than a department, with faculty from over 20 departments all over the university including in the following:

  • Medical School
  • Michigan Medicine Clinical Departments
  • College of Literature, Science, and the Arts
  • College of Engineering
  • College of Dentistry
  • And More

The CMB Program fosters interactions among students and faculty, helping to broaden the students’ appreciation of diverse research opportunities and to encourage interdisciplinary thinking in a highly collaborative atmosphere. Our distinctive goal is to continue to provide a firm basis in cellular and molecular biology through the exceptional individualized training that characterizes the CMB Program. Students interested in the CMB program apply first to the Program in Biomedical Sciences (PIBS), where they will spend their first year taking classes, doing research rotations, and deciding on their program of choice to finish out their Ph.D. starting in the second year. CMB also has students from the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), who have selected CMB as their program of choice to complete the Ph.D. part of their training.
