Every day, people experiencing homelessness show up at hospitals and emergency departments with severe medical conditions that could be avoided by preventive care, health education, and vaccination. Barriers to care and social determinants of health lead to high rates of diabetes, hypertension, and vaccine-preventable illness in people experiencing homelessness. Breaking down barriers to care and repairing the relationship between people experiencing homelessness and medical professionals is key to improving health and wellness in our communities.
Wolverine Street Medicine is a student-led medical group that provides free medical services to people experiencing homelessness through mobile outreach visits and barrier-free shelter clinics in Detroit and Washtenaw county. But we need your help to continue offering our patients basic medical services. In the past year, we have started the following initiatives:
- Washtenaw County Expansion: We have partnered with the Ypsilanti District Library and expanded to weekly Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County street runs to increase access to medical care for our local clients.
- Foot Care Clinic Expansion: We have partnered with Michigan Medicine Podiatry to provide comprehensive foot care to our unhoused neighbors in Jackson and at St. Andrew’s Church in Ann Arbor.
- Dental & Social Work Expansion: In collaboration with the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, we now offer dental screenings and preventive education and care.
- Undergraduate Board: We established an undergraduate board to expand mentorship and educational opportunities for students interested in serving the unhoused community.
- Community Health Fair: We hosted our first annual Community Health Fair in Ypsilanti, providing food, clothing, foot care, and medical services to community members.
- Emergency Medicine Resident Elective: We partnered with the Michigan Medicine Department of Emergency Medicine to establish an elective for residents and fellows focused on providing critical medical care to the unhoused population.
Your support will allow us to continue to expand our organization's initiatives to better meet the needs of our population. See how your gift can make a difference:
