Help transform the First-Generation experience.
Scholarships make an LSA education accessible for many talented students who might otherwise not be able to afford a college experience. For an individual student, a scholarship can be a life-changing opportunity that opens the door to unparalleled experiences, both on and off campus. Scholarship support makes a major difference, not only for the student scholar, who may be the first in their family to attend college, but also for siblings, relatives, and entire communities. Gifts to this fund will be used to provide need-based scholarship support for LSA First-Generation college students.
The LSA First-Generation Commitment empowers First-Generation and low-income (FLI) students to celebrate and recognize their lived experiences, access and navigate campus resources, build relationships to cultivate a sense of belonging, and develop career readiness skills to prepare them for post-graduate opportunities.
The First-Generation Commitment has several goals—and they all work together to promote holistic student success. We connect First-Gen and/or limited-income students to:
Relationships
We foster a positive sense of belonging for students by immediately connecting them to a supportive community—including faculty, staff, fellow peers, and the extended LSA First-Gen community—that will partner with students to identify their strengths and highlight the vibrant contributions they make to our LSA family.
Resources
Through personalized, one-on-one Success Coaching, we help students:
- Build their confidence as a First-Gen U-M LSA student
- Wayfind across campus and identify key buildings, departments, and units
- Get connected to academic, career, financial, and mental health resources
- Navigate barriers to their success and develop strategies to overcome them
Ready-to-launch support
The First-Gen Commitment is proactive—through strong relationships across the campus community, First-Gen students are supported with innovative career exploration workshops and resources, ensuring they're prepared to seize academic opportunities, apply for jobs or internships, and confidently chart their futures.
Invest in a first-generation student’s journey at LSA with your gift to First-Gen scholarships.
A message from our generous lead donors: "We are proud to offer this match to spark support for the First Gen initiative. Creating opportunity and expanding access has long been at the heart of our giving, and we’re thrilled to partner with LSA in advancing that mission. Go Blue!" -Jessica and Dana Koch
