CENTER FOR CHINESE STUDIES STRATEGIC FUND ‑ 316273
The Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies (LRCCS) at the University of Michigan is dedicated to advancing knowledge about China, past and present. Last year, the Department of Education’s cancellation of Title VI, the federal program that supported area studies education, severely hampered our fellowship funding and community outreach. Gifts to the Strategic Fund are vital for helping us maintain scholarships for students studying Chinese and China, and arts and culture programming that brings China to life for our campus and regional community. Title VI provided over half of the funding we awarded to American graduate students specializing in Chinese Studies through the Masters in International and Regional Studies (MIRS). These students are now scholars and journalists, lawyers and business professionals, issue advocates and policy makers, many of whom could not have afforded to study China without federal financial assistance. The loss of Title VI means that endowment income will become our only source of scholarships for the next generation of students. With your help, we can continue to give them generous support, preparing them for a world that sorely needs their passion for and knowledge of China.
But knowledge about China is not only gained in the classroom. In 2025, LRCCS brought a troupe of kunqu artists to campus, performing for an audience of over 600 and appearing in many other classrooms and workshops. In 2026, we are sponsoring a series of events entitled “Dancing with the Dragon,” where students will build a dragon out of found and sustainable materials, learn to play Chinese percussion instruments, get trained to perform the traditional dragon dance, and perform in multiple venues both on campus and in Ann Arbor. Our fall event on the dragon theme at UMMA won the City of Ann Arbor’s Golden Paintbrush award! Your gifts give us the means to continue to design and sponsor performances like these.
Your contributions directly enable LRCCS to continue this vital work of educating, engaging, and inspiring. Whether through innovative courses, public events, or groundbreaking research, your support helps share the values and vibrancy of Chinese scholarship and culture with the world.
