ECOLOGY AND EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY STRATEGIC FUND ‑ 309886
Every day in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) at the University of Michigan, we see curiosity come to life -our classrooms, labs, and field sites buzz with ideas, teamwork, and a shared commitment: understanding how living things interact with each other and with their environment. Whether it’s looking at the tiniest microbes or tracking the migration of birds across continents, our community is deeply engaged in questions that affect all of us—now and for generations to come.
In the last year only, Associate Professor Gideon Bradburd’s team revealed new insights into human evolution with a publication in Science, while Professor Gina Baucom’s group uncovered the hidden impacts of herbicides. Our newest faculty—including rising stars Thais Vasconcelos and James Boyko—are harnessing Artificial Intelligence to map the tapestry of life across the globe. And our graduate student pioneers, like Bhaskar Kumawat in Luis Zaman’s lab, are illuminating the mechanisms of evolution using digital organisms.
EEB is not just about excellence in research. It’s about fostering the next generation of scientists and thinkers—students like Paige McCreadie, whose honors thesis earned top recognition across all UM biology majors. Our faculty, recently celebrated by prestigious organizations such as the AAAS, remains committed to inspiring discovery, curiosity, and evidence-based stewardship of our planet.
This work matters more than ever. Climate change, biodiversity loss, and emerging environmental challenges make our mission urgent: to innovate, educate, and connect. Yet, our ability to empower bold research and hands-on learning depends on the generosity of those who share our vision.
Your gift to the EEB Strategic Fund isn’t just a donation—it’s an investment in groundbreaking discovery, student opportunity, and community outreach. You can shape the future of science and ensure Michigan remains a leader in addressing global challenges in ecology and evolutionary biology. This year, as we proudly celebrate the department’s 25th anniversary, we invite you to help us reach our next milestone. With your support, we can continue building a community of discovery and impact for the next 25 years—and beyond.
