Your gift fuels student research, faculty mentorship, and interdisciplinary discovery in Complex Systems.
The Center for the Study of Complex Systems supports students and faculty across disciplines by providing a platform for research, education, and training that uses complex systems approaches to understand how systems behave, change, and interact.
Your gift supports our student research, faculty development, and events in the areas of nonlinear, dynamical, and adaptive systems.
CHARLIE DOERING STRATEGIC FUND - 338247
The Charlie Doering Strategic Fund honors Charles Doering (1956–2021), a longtime leader of the Center for the Study of Complex Systems and a respected professor, mentor, and colleague. Charlie was deeply committed to his students, his colleagues, and the work of the Center, and he played an important role in shaping its growth and direction. He encouraged curiosity, welcomed new ideas, and made time for students and scholars at every stage. As Director of CSCS, he helped foster a strong sense of community grounded in research, education, and collaboration.
Gifts to fund support the people and opportunities Charlie valued most, including:
- Professional development for postdoctoral scholars and graduate students
- Travel to conferences and learning opportunities that expand ideas and community
- The long-term goal of establishing a permanent Charlie Doering Postdoctoral Fellowship
Thanks to the generosity of Charlie’s family, colleagues, students, and friends — including his wife, Paula — the fund is endowed and continues to support future scholars.
Help carry forward Charlie Doering’s legacy with a gift to this fund.
RICK RIOLO MEMORIAL FUND - 700788*
The Rick Riolo Memorial Fund honors Rick L. Riolo (1950–2018), a founding member of the Center for the Study of Complex Systems and a beloved teacher, mentor, and scholar. For decades, Rick taught students the art and science of agent-based modeling and played a central role in shaping complex systems research at the University of Michigan. Rick was known for his extraordinary contributions to computational and evolutionary modeling, and more importantly for the generosity, curiosity, and care he brought to every collaboration. Students and colleagues alike described him as the heart and soul of CSCS — someone who always made time for others and believed deeply in learning through shared inquiry.
In recognition of his impact, this endowed fund supports the annual Rick Riolo Memorial Undergraduate Research Prize, celebrating outstanding undergraduate research in complex systems. The prize reflects Rick’s lifelong commitment to students and ensures that his passion for discovery continues to inspire future generations.
Honor Rick Riolo’s legacy by supporting student research through a gift to this fund.
COMPLEX SYSTEMS GIFT ACCOUNT - 321662
