Cultural immersion helps undergraduates develop a broader, more mature perspective on global affairs—including politics, education, society, and economics. By gaining firsthand experience and deeper respect for diverse issues, students become more globally aware. CGIS provides a variety of learning formats to fit students’ unique range of interests and needs, including internships, short-term summer programs, semester and academic year terms, and intensive language immersion.
Research shows students who study abroad stand out in the job market, earning on average $4,159 more in their first job after graduation (The Forum on Education Abroad). Employers value the critical thinking, independence, adaptability, communication, and intercultural awareness students gain through international experiences. By supporting CGIS, you help students build skills that give them a competitive edge in the global workforce.
STUDENT TESTIMONY:
As a student at U-M, I've learned that growth happens when you step outside your comfort zone. Early in my first semester, I heard something from seniors and alumni that stuck with me—their biggest regret was not taking advantage of Study Abroad programs. I've kept that advice in mind and have been determined to make the most of this opportunity… This summer for me is a chance to step into the unfamiliar, grow in ways I can't yet imagine, and carry those lessons with me long after I return home.

Gifts to CGIS enable the LSA Scholarship Office to offer study abroad scholarships to LSA undergraduates with financial need—last year, over 60% of CGIS students received aid, and 1 in 4 were Pell-eligible. As student interest in global experiences grows, it is vital that U-M makes these experiences accessible to students from all backgrounds. With over 120 programs in 45+ countries, CGIS is ready to meet this demand—but we need your help! Join us in making life-changing global education possible for every Wolverine.
