About

Help us reach our $25,000 goal to support more CHEPS student interns this summer

For more than 15 years, CHEPS has brought together students from diverse academic backgrounds to work on real-world healthcare challenges. Side by side with clinicians, hospital leaders, and healthcare organizations, our students apply engineering and operations research tools to improve patient care, from analyzing patient flow and access, to redesigning clinician workflows, to automating and improving provider and patient scheduling.

Just as importantly, CHEPS is a warm, inclusive community. Students find mentorship, collaboration, and belonging here. These connections last well beyond graduation.

We've had a busy and impactful year! Here are just a few highlights:

  • Reduced the length of stay for patients presenting with chest pain in the Michigan Medicine Adult Emergency Department by up to three hours, improving both patient experience and clinical efficiency.
  • Supported collaborators in achieving a historic policy change – the first time in 100 years – to national prenatal care guidelines, with a focus on improving care for low-income women.
  • Launched CHEPS Hits the Road, reconnecting with alumni through our first reunion in Chicago, with more events planned.
  • Through our Operation Bird Dog work, helped reduce wait times for patients seeking specialty care at Michigan Medicine – one patient at a time, with gratitude from patients reminding us why this work matters.
  • Initiated new provider scheduling partnerships and significantly enhanced our optimization infrastructure, positioning CHEPS to support more healthcare organizations with complex scheduling needs.
  • Hired, mentored and supported more than fifty new student researchers who gained hands-on experience, presented their work, and explored careers at the intersection of healthcare, engineering, and policy.

Why your gift matters

Your generosity directly supports our students. It takes $7,000 to fully fund one student intern for the summer, but every gift makes a difference no matter the size. Contributions also help us:

  • Host Lunch & Learn sessions that connect students with healthcare experts
  • Send students to academic conferences to share their work and grow professionally
  • Build community and mentorship opportunities that shape students’ futures

There are many ways to support CHEPS beyond a financial gift: sharing our campaign on social media, spreading the word within your personal and professional networks, or mentoring our students and programs.

We are incredibly proud of what we’ve built together – and deeply grateful to you for being part of the CHEPS community. Thank you for helping us invest in students who are improving healthcare today and shaping its future!
