Support Nursing Innovation at the School of Nursing

For 50 years, the University of Michigan-Flint's School of Nursing has been a leader in nursing education, shaping students to become knowledgeable and skilled healthcare professionals. Our focus on innovative, high-quality programs gives future nurses the expertise they need to excel in their careers.

Affordability in education is crucial. Nearly half of our students face financial barriers that prevent enrollment or delay their ability to graduate and launch their careers in nursing. While UM-Flint offers some of Michigan's most affordable tuition rates, higher education remains out of reach for many.

By contributing to any of the funds listed below, you can enhance student success and ensure high-impact experiences.

Help us eliminate these financial barriers and pave the way for our students' bright futures in healthcare. Support their journey to success today!

Do you have a strong passion for positively impacting the lives of nurses professionally? Consider making a Giving Blueday contribution to the UM-Flint School of Nursing Opportunity Fund! UM-Flint’s School of Nursing is passionate about providing the best experience for our students by covering the cost of registration, travel and lodging for a wide variety of events and conferences. This fund has also supported the purchase of technology, which is crucial to enriching the student experience within the clinical setting.

In the past year, over $7800 was awarded to students, including participants who engaged in service learning in Kenya and in political advocacy experiences in our nation’s capital. A reflection from a past recipient highlights the value of this fund: “I want to give my sincere thanks for this opportunity to attend the AACN Nursing Health Policy Summit in DC. This opportunity reinforced my interest in health policy to address the health disparities that continue to impact patients, family, nurses, other health care professionals, faculty, leadership and the world today.”

Supporting this fund means knowing that you are making a positive change in the lives of School of Nursing students and the patients they will go on to serve.

The School of Nursing Student Emergency Fund is here to help students who have nowhere else to turn. We understand that life happens, and do not want our students to struggle or take time off of school due to an unexpected financial barrier. To help better support our students, we have created the Nursing Student Emergency Fund. Students in our programs may find that they are beginning to struggle financially due to a job loss, unexpected expenses or other situations. If this is the case, they can apply for support through the fund. Students awarded support will receive assistance paying outstanding balances for classes or receive help with their living expenses

Some of their stories include a single mother who was unable to pay her rent after paying her tuition bill. Another student used the grant to help cover the cost of required course books. One of the grateful recipients wrote in her application, This grant will help me to focus on my program so I can afford to buy books, pay rent, household bills and transportation until I’m able to catch up on tuition."

Supporting this fund means knowing that you are making a positive change in the lives of School of Nursing students and the patients they will go on to serve.

Nursing Research is an integral part of the nursing profession. Nurses generate evidence-based knowledge through research, which directly informs and improves practice and patient outcomes. Support the Femscope project and help revolutionize cervical cancer screening, particularly for women in low- and middle-income countries. The speculum, which requires the use of stirrups, has been used for over 200 years for screenings. At the School of Nursing, nurse researchers have created a new medical device that allows for a quality, comfortable exam for the patient and clinician: the Femscope.

This prototype is roughly the size of a pencil, has a light attached, and collects the same cells that are collected for cervical cancer and HPV testing. This device eliminates the need to put patients in stirrups; instead, patients can lie in a more comfortable position, such as on their side. Removing the need for stirrups also allows these exams to become more accessible, particularly for individuals in wheelchairs or with hip mobility issues.

In addition to pelvic exams, there's potential for the device to be used to make rectal exams more gentle. In recent years, there has been a rise in rectal exam screenings to account for the increase in rectal cancers. Since this device is smaller than what's currently used, it makes the exam more comfortable for the patient and easier for the healthcare provider.

Why Donate?

Address a Critical Health Need: Your support will advance a device that provides a modern, more comfortable alternative to traditional cervical cancer screening methods, reaching the 70% of women worldwide who currently miss out on these life-saving screenings.

Promote Accessibility and Affordability: By contributing, you help make screenings more affordable and accessible, particularly in low-resource settings, ensuring that more women can access the healthcare they need.

Support Innovation in Women's Health: Investing in the Femscope project means backing cutting-edge technology designed to enhance patient comfort and enable comprehensive healthcare solutions across various medical settings.

Join us in our mission to transform women's healthcare globally. Your donation can make a significant impact on improving lives and preventing cervical cancer through innovative screening solutions.
