Olympic weightlifting, consisting of the snatch and clean & jerk, is one of the oldest athletic endeavors recorded - its inclusion in the Olympic Games of 1896 makes it one of the original Olympic events. In the United States, Olympic weightlifting is a relatively small sport, and collegiate weightlifting represents an even smaller fraction of the sport.
However, at Michigan, we are the leaders and the best. Michigan Weightlifting is the first Olympic weightlifting club sport (i.e. weightlifting club sponsored by a university) in the Big 10 and only one of a handful in the nation. Our goal is to contribute to the growth of the sport, specifically at the university level, by offering a club that athletes can join to learn the sport of Olympic weightlifting.
Michigan Weightlifting started out with a few college students and big dreams. Within its first two years as a student organization, the club secured the legendary Robert Morris (affectionately known as Coach Bob) as head coach and landed a home at Wolverine Strength & Conditioning. In September 2019, the University of Michigan granted Michigan Weightlifting sponsorship by the university, which allowed us to gain exposure and recognition at both the university and national level. Now, in 2025, we have two incredible high level coaches, Richard Yan and Debbie Hudson, that have allowed the team to reach new PR’s and focus on improving their mental strength in the sport.
Our club, Michigan Weightlifting, is pioneering the development of a new sector of collegiate athletics. With your help and the right equipment, we can continue to educate athletes about the sport and inspire lifelong passion, community, and invaluable mental and physical improvements through Olympic weightlifting. We are fundraising to maintain our space in an impressive, off campus gym that has been supporting us throughout our journey.
Due to the complex nature of the sport, specific equipment like belts, shoes, wrist and knee wraps, bumper plates, Olympic barbells and singlets are integral for a competition. Unfortunately, such equipment can be extremely expensive. Donations that exceed our goal will go towards covering the cost of equipment as well as providing financial support through lowering dues to reach more students and eliminate potential financial barriers.
Any and all gifts are appreciated. Thank you for your support of Michigan Weightlifting!
