Founded in 1972, the Native American Student Association (NASA) provides a vital and supportive community for Native American students at the University of Michigan, both on- and off-campus. With a focus on cultural, educational, and community-building activities, NASA creates a space for students to connect with their heritage, build lifelong friendships, and engage in meaningful experiences throughout their college journey.
For over 50 years, NASA has advocated for the well-being and success of Native students, striving to improve the university’s environment for both current students and future generations. Through its diverse range of programs, NASA fosters a welcoming environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and culturally.
One of NASA's most cherished traditions is the Dance for Mother Earth Powwow, a cultural celebration that has been held for 50 years. This event is not just a celebration of Native culture—it’s a crucial opportunity for students, faculty, and the broader community to come together and celebrate Native American traditions. The Powwow brings together dancers, drummers, artists, and families, and illustrates the large impact that Native American students and community members have brought to the University of Michigan.
NASA also holds a Native Graduation Ceremony for graduating members. This event is an opportunity for graduates to celebrate with their families and friends, and is an essential moment for students to reflect on their growth and the significance of their achievements in a culturally meaningful way.
Another cornerstone of NASA’s work is the Native Student Welcome, a special orientation event designed to welcome incoming Native American freshmen and transfer students to the university. This event helps ease the transition to college life by providing students with a sense of community, support, and connection to Native peers and mentors, which is vital for their academic and personal success.
In addition to these key events, NASA hosts a variety of cultural workshops and weekly hangouts that bring students together. These gatherings provide students with a space to share their experiences and build lasting relationships with one another. The workshops and hangouts are important spaces for cultural enrichment, personal development, and creating a strong sense of belonging within the university.
The success of NASA’s programs depends on the continued support of donors like you. Your contribution will help fund the diverse range of events and activities that NASA organizes throughout the year, ensuring they remain accessible and impactful for Native American students at UM. Whether it’s helping to support the Native Graduation Ceremony, facilitating cultural workshops, or creating spaces for students to connect through weekly hangouts, your donation will make a tangible difference in the lives of Native students.
With your support, we can continue to provide vital resources and a strong sense of community for Native American students at the University of Michigan for years to come. Every donation, no matter the size, helps make NASA’s programs more welcoming and impactful.
Thank you for supporting the Native American Student Association at the University of Michigan!
