Our chapter of the Global Health Alliance is an independent student-run organization and one of the nation's first to partner with three local and international non-profit organizations. Our first partner is Avalon Housing in Ann Arbor, MI. We work with them by helping run the front desk, beautification projects, and art events. Our second partner is Washtenaw Literacy, also in Ann Arbor, MI. With them, we teach English as a Second Language (ESL) to local community members.
Our partner outside of the United States is Green Umbrella School in the Putsor Community near Phnom Penh, Cambodia, which believes in the potential of today's youth. Green Umbrella provides quality education to disenfranchised families to achieve sustainable development, facilitates leadership programs to enhance confidence and unity within the community, and leads livelihood workshops for adults and English classes for children. We raise an annual $5,000 for our international partner and assist with their assessment research and education modeling during our 3-week trip every summer. At our Monday night meetings, we plan fundraising and volunteer events and hold discussion-based lessons about public health issues.
