Woven Wind is partnering with Pleasant Lake Elementary School to install a wind turbine. Providing a wind turbine to elementary schools gives students a tangible example of renewable energy that they can interact with. In addition, we engage students at Estabrook Elementary School and Pleasant Lake Elementary School with STEM curriculum with a focus on sustainability.
Most of our activities will take place at Estabrook Elementary, a school with limited resources for their science curriculum. They have one science teacher who is burdened with the task of creating lessons for all ~450 students. The school also only has 4 breadboards and a limited ability to conduct hands-on activities. For our activity days at Estabrook, we will give students breadboards to take home so that they can continue to interact with curriculum outside of the classroom.
Instead of winning a prize in a competition, our prize is less tangible; our prize is the development of young minds to have an understanding of renewable energy. The direct work of our club in the local community makes our impact invaluable for inspiring future scientists and engineers. Students come from all backgrounds and have different paths, some with fewer opportunities than others. Our mission to engage students in STEM enables students who traditionally wouldn’t have as much exposure to the field to learn about science and technology. By having visible and hands-on applications, all students can learn the value of renewable energy.
