What is CAMP?
Creating Adventurous and Mindful Physicians (CAMP) is a backpacking pre-orientation trip that welcomes incoming medical students to the University of Michigan’s Medical School, aiming to build community while exploring the beauty of Michigan and easing the many fears and stressors that may come with change and starting medical school. CAMP offers an optional, student-led, 3 or 5 day overnight backpacking trip to help foster friendships among new classmates in an inclusive, accessible, and non-medical setting.
Donor Impact:
The support of donors is crucial to funding our efforts. Your financial contributions assist with the cost of camping gear, transportation, food, first aid kits, campsites, guide training, and all other logistics that allow us to increase accessibility to all individuals. The lasting impact of CAMP has helped students find a sense of community and support as they enter into a new phase of their lives. We are so grateful to our donors for helping make this experience possible. Your contributions make lasting impacts on our lives as aspiring physicians, and we can’t thank you enough for your kindness and generosity.
CAMP’s Legacy:
“I heard from older students that CAMP was the ideal way to transition into medical school, and I could not agree more. I started the trip with a group of strangers and finished five days later with the closest friends and supporters. It was so comforting to enter orientation with a strong network of peers who wanted nothing more than to see each other succeed. The bonds you make with your classmates at CAMP and resultant sense of belonging at UMMS truly cannot be overstated. I will always be grateful to CAMP for giving me my closest friends in medical school and a strong network of support during a time of transition.”
- Nisha Rajakrishna, UMMS Class of 2028
