Help us be the fastest human powered submarine in the world!
About Us
HPS is an engineering design team where we design, build, and race a fully flooded human-powered submarine. We are one of the oldest running student led engineering projects at the university. Since 1989 we have had the goal of creating a fast, safe, and high performing human powered submersible vehicle. Our team designs and manufactures every component of the sub, from the hull to the electronic steering to the life support systems, incorporating aspects of nearly every discipline of engineering. In addition to design, our team manufactures and assembles nearly all of the sub here on campus in the Wilson Student Team Project Center.
Our Goal This Year
This coming June, we'll be traveling to Carderock, Maryland to compete in the International Submarine Races 2025 with our newest submarine. Marlin includes a new direct drive system, newly manufactured control surfaces, and newly designed safety systems, all enclosed by a fiberglass hull. Two years of design, building, and testing have produced Marlin, our most innovate submarine yet.
Why HPS?
HPS provides a small, tight-knit community of students who are interested in getting hands-on engineering experience. We pride ourselves on being a majority women-led, diverse group of students, studying everything from Nuclear Engineering to Economics.
