The University of Michigan Student Run Free Clinic (UMSRFC) is a student-run organization dedicated to providing quality health care free of charge to uninsured community members, while creating opportunities for University of Michigan students and physicians to confront health disparities through direct action. Our location in Pinckney was chosen because Livingston County, which spans almost 600 square miles, did not have a single free clinic prior to our establishment in 2011.
With the exception of attending physicians who oversee patient visits, the clinic is entirely student-operated. Students across multiple schools within the University of Michigan — medicine, nursing, pharmacy, social work, and public health, as well as our CLIMe interpreter partners and nutrition teams — come together to coordinate the short-term logistics of running a clinic and implement long-term projects that further our mission. Our Care Partners Program pairs students with patients who have complex needs to ensure close follow-up and continuity of care.
Some of our comprehensive clinical and social services for patients include:
- Free, high-quality preventive and primary medical care
- Interpreter services for non-English speaking patients
- Specialty psychiatric and gynecologic care
- Tele-dermatology care
- Blood testing and imaging studies
- Help with Medicaid, ACA, charity care, and prescription assistance applications
- Mental health counseling
- Nutrition education
- Flu, Pneumonia, and Tetanus shots
- Home blood pressure monitoring kits
In addition to providing routine care, we've launched new initiatives. We continue to build up our USPSTF preventive screening services (to ensure all patients receive appropriate cancer screenings). We also expanded immunization services to now include pneumococcal bacteria. We’ve also introduced home blood pressure monitoring to support patients with high blood pressure.
We would like to continue to expand our services to support our vulnerable population. We're working to include the HPV vaccine in our immunization program and to integrate dental services through our dental school. Our future efforts will focus on collaborating with the schools of public health, business, and health administration to identify high-need areas and facilitate our growth.
We are requesting your help in making our clinic run smoothly! The UMSRFC relies on your generous donations to ensure that we are able to keep our doors open and continue to serve the Pinckney community. Your charitable donations will support our day-to-day work and future goals in numerous ways, including:
- Purchasing gynecology day supplies, as providers are currently using their own supplies
- Providing transportation for patients to come to the clinic for their visits
- Advertising and outreach of our services to uninsured individuals in the area
- Expanding telehealth and virtual services
To support us and the community we serve in, besides donating, you can help us by sharing this Giving BlueDay page with your friends, family, coworkers, organization, and even by posting our story on your social media accounts.
