About

Welcome to our page - Support Complex Systems this Giving Blueday!

The Center for the Study of Complex Systems (CSCS) supports a diverse body of research, training, and educational initiatives in the areas of nonlinear, dynamical, and adaptive systems. Members of our Center use complex systems approaches to study systems like the brain, ecosystems, political systems, social networks, climate change, and the Internet. These systems consist of many interacting individuals or parts that together produce collective behaviors that exceed and even transcend the capabilities of the constituent parts. CSCS features a broadly interdisciplinary group of faculty, students, and researchers.

Please consider donating to one of the following funds:

CHARLIE DOERING STRATEGIC FUND - 338247

The Charlie Doering Strategic Fund for the Center for the Study of Complex Systems will be used to support the strategic priorities of the Center.

Charlie Doering passed away in May of 2021. He was an extraordinary human being, professor, mentor, friend and beloved family member.

To honor Charlie we set up the Charlie Doering Strategic Fund in 2021. While our goal is to provide more funding for postdoctoral support - in terms of funds for travel to conferences and other learning experiences for this group, we would eventually like to raise the necessary amount to fund a permanent Charlie Doering Postdoctoral Fellowship.

Over the past few years, we received generous donations from Charlie's colleagues, students, family and friends. His beloved wife, Paula, covered the remaining balance so the fund could reach endowed status. This enables us to continue raising the amount necessary to support a postdoc while providing limited support for postdoc and graduate student professional development.

RICK RIOLO MEMORIAL FUND - 700788

The Rick Riolo Memorial Fund was set up in honor of another invaluable and founding member of our Center.  Rick also left us too soon and was a huge loss to the academic community and to the innumerable students to which he taught the art and science of agent-based modeling.

Rick was so beloved by his students that they almost single-handedly raised enough to endow this fund in a couple of months. Click the link above to read about his extensive impact and broad fields of study.

With the establishment of the endowed fund, the Center for the Study of Complex Systems now  offers the annual RRMF Undergraduate Research Prize. As we continue to receive generous gifts in support of this fund, we now offer a first and a second place prize. The prize competition gives us a great excuse to celebrate Rick at this time every year.

*Contributions will be added to an existing endowed fund, and distributions from the Fund will be made in accordance with the University’s then existing endowment distribution policy and used and administered as provided in the documents establishing the Fund.

COMPLEX SYSTEMS GIFT ACCOUNT - 321662

This fund supports the full range of Center activities. Gifts to this account are not limited to specific prizes or postdoctoral support.

Gifts to this fund will advance the science of complex systems by supporting interdisciplinary studies and agent-based modeling on dynamic systems, as well as our undergraduate minor, graduate certificate, seminar series, and special events.
