Gifts to Women's Ultimate contribute to...
The mission of the women's club Ultimate Frisbee team, Flywheel, is to teach the sport of Ultimate to new players, build a community around the love of the game, and provide a competitive athletic outlet for its members. We consist of over 45 athletes between a nationally competitive A team and a regionally competitive, developmental B team. Between both teams, we have four coaches, seven captains, and 11 officers who coordinate practices, tournaments, and more for the club.
Our goal is to build on our past success and remain nationally competitive by attending high-level tournaments. In order to do so, we rely in part on outside support to keep the travel and tournament fees as low as possible for players so that we may remain accessible to anyone who wants to grow in the sport of Ultimate.
We are seeking $2,500 in funds to support student athletes’ travel and lodging at future tournaments.
In order to develop players and remain nationally competitive, Flywheel travels to tournaments across the country to compete against other universities in the D-1 college division. In the past season, Flywheel traveled to Martinsville, VA, Rock Hill, SC, Champaign, IL, Frederica, DE, Seattle, WA, and Madison, WI to compete in various tournaments.
By traveling to these tournaments across the country, players in the Flywheel program are able to represent the University of Michigan at an elite level. Not only are players able to execute a variety of Ultimate-specific skills, but they also develop leadership, collaboration, and grit in this sporting environment. Naturally, however, the expenses incurred from this travel add up. Nevertheless, Flywheel is committed to accessibility by keeping player costs low.
The impact of generous contributions cannot go unstated within the Flywheel program. This funding goes far in covering tournament expenses, supporting our commitment to accessibility by reducing the difference which is covered in player fees. Additionally, with these contributions supplementing team travel and lodging costs, Flywheel has more flexibility in scheduling tournaments by in-part removing the budgetary constraints that the team faces.
