Gifts to Maize Mirchi A Cappella contribute to...
Maize Mirchi is the University of Michigan’s premiere fusion a cappella group. We use elements of South Asian and Western music to create a unique a cappella sound, spreading our love for South Asian culture through performances in Ann Arbor and around the country. We typically have 15-18 members and a six-member executive team. As a fusion group, we see our art as an opportunity to bring members of the Ann Arbor community together to understand the importance and history of South Asian music. With the lack of South Asian music performances on-campus, many audience members find comfort in our music as a way to connect to their roots. For our members of South Asian descent, the event is a chance to display their growing connection to and love for their heritage and culture through months of hard work and rehearsals.
As an arts focused group on campus, we recognize the importance of keeping the arts alive in our daily life. Our members range from all backgrounds, and colleges at UM, with different passions for the future. However, music and the arts tie us all together, which is why we would love to help fund the SMTD Student Aid Fund, to help those who need support, to continue to find love in the arts. We were also interested in funding Dance Marathon, as a way of bringing the arts to children who need it the most, and to support the idea that art transcends beyond a certain profession-- it can be a therapy in and of itself!
