Our project will fund travel, lodging, and tournament entry fees so that 35+ Wolverines can compete at Collegiate Taekwondo National Championships. As a niche sport in the U.S., Taekwondo receives less attention than other sports, so a website feature would aid us greatly in our cause of keeping participation accessible to beginners and experienced members. Support will also refresh our protective gear and coaching, boosting safety, equity, leadership, and Michigan pride on the national stage.
The funds from this project will go to lodging, travel, required electronic scoring equipment, coaching, and shared safety gear, so cost isn’t a barrier. Due to limited funding, Nationals has historically seen fewer than 5 Michigan competitors (never more than 10), so this project aims to send 30–40 Wolverines. This low turnout at the nationals tournament has further contributed to our lack of recognition compared to other club sports. This has resulted in a self-reinforcing cycle of lacking both funding and recognition. We hope that by garnering enough attention and maximizing our fundraising efforts that we can cover the biggest expenses related to tournament entry fees and required equipment, and ultimately expand access to nationals for beginners and veterans, strengthen recruitment and leadership, and raise U-M’s visibility on the collegiate stage in the martial arts world. A feature spot on the Giving Tuesday website will give us visibility and a spotlight that would not be possible otherwise. This feature will allow Michigan Taekwondo to garner the attention of people who don't even know that the sport exists and be able to secure a stage/ring for our Taekwondo Wolverines to shine.
