We are seeking funding to travel to the University of Oregon to attend the Big Ten Native Student conference. The Big Ten Native Student Gathering is an annual conference for Native American students and allies at Big Ten schools, fostering resource sharing and communication nationwide while supporting community building and solidarity. The Big 10 gathering is an opportunity for all of our students and those interested in our experiences to come together with fellow students like us.
Our community has had awesome experiences with the Big 10 conference. Last year, we had the privilege of hosting it here at Michigan. We were able to use a variety of rooms on campus, including the University of Michigan Museum of Modern Art (UMMA), for a round dance. A round dance consists of hand drummers and singers while an entire group dances, as the name implies, around them. Round dances are traditionally to honor those who came before us, so using UMMA as a space to express ourselves and remember our ancestors was a really special moment, especially as a small group of students and allies that have been historically underrepresented. The University of Oregon has planned similar activities for our organizations, so we are really excited to make the trip there to honor and advance the academic partnerships and support we have within the Big 10 Native Student Alliance and beyond.
