Nourishing Futures: Supporting UM-Dearborn's Student Food Pantry

We Did It—Together! Thanks to your incredible support, we reached our goal early, secured the university match, and surpassed our goal of $5,000 for the Student Food Pantry!🎉🍎 Your generosity has already made a profound impact, allowing us to continue addressing food insecurity and supporting our student community.

However, the need doesn’t stop here. Demand for the Student Food Pantry remains high, and your continued contributions are vital to keeping this essential resource available for our students. Let's see how far we can go to support our students today!

Addressing Food Insecurity on Campus

The Student Food Pantry was established to address the growing issue of food insecurity within our student community. Many students face financial challenges that make it difficult to afford basic necessities, including nutritious food. The pantry provides a safe, welcoming space where students can access groceries free of charge, alleviating financial strain and helping them stay healthy, focused, and ready to learn.

Growing Need for Support

Demand for our Student Food Pantry has surged over the past few years, reflecting the deepening need among our students. In Fall 2021, the pantry distributed 1,998 pounds of food. By Fall 2023, that number more than doubled to 5,133 pounds. Likewise, the number of unique shoppers increased significantly—from 104 in FY21 to 443 in FY23. This sharp rise highlights the essential role the pantry plays in supporting our students' well-being.

Enhancing Well-being and Academic Achievement

Access to the food pantry not only meets basic needs but also promotes mental and physical well-being. By alleviating the stress associated with food insecurity, the pantry allows students to focus more on their studies, leading to improved academic performance and retention rates. Beyond offering vital resources, the pantry fosters a supportive, community-centered environment, reinforcing the message that no student should have to choose between their education and their next meal.

“There is NOTHING bigger than providing food for people and helping those in need. The pantry is how I stay in school, period.
“UMD pantry is my savior. I can get essentials which save me for an entire week! Moreover, the quality of the food is always good. As a student I can’t afford groceries but I am able to depend on the pantry to get me through this. Thank you so much!”
“The only way to do my best work while in school is to make sure I can focus. A huge part of that is not having to overwork just to eat. I can get food, focus on school, and have a healthy work balance. I honestly don’t know what I would do without the pantry.”

Your Support Matters!

As demand continues to grow, so does the need for resources to sustain and expand our services. By contributing to the Student Food Pantry, you directly impact students' lives, ensuring they have the essential support to thrive academically and personally.
