The benefits of sport, and access to sport, are well known, including physical and mental wellness, self-efficacy, and leadership, among others.
But imagine you are a disabled athlete or child, relegated to watching sport from the sidelines because your PE class doesn't have adaptive sports or there aren't enough people to field an adaptive sports team.
U-M Adaptive Sports and Fitness (ASF) is changing this reality through work that increases awareness about, knowledge of, access to, and participation in adaptive sports and fitness among people with and without disabilities at U-M and in the greater Ann Arbor community.
ASF has enjoyed increased visibility with recent events such as the 2024 Paris Paralympics, President Ono’s video highlighting Dr. Okanlami in his monthly “Portrait of a Wolverine” series, and the organic, grass roots efforts of ASF and its supporters. This increased visibility has resulted in a high volume of requests for recreational programming. U-M schools and colleges, administrative units, student groups, fraternities, sororities as well as numerous external stakeholders are hungry for ASF to provide recreational programming for them to help spread the word about and play adaptive sports.
$30,000 in donations to the Adaptive Sports Are For Everyone campaign will provide funds for an additional 2-3 programming events per week over the course of a year--from "Try it" Adaptive Sports clinics, to educational presentations, establishing a presence at community outreach events, and more, and further supports our mission.
Everyone deserves a chance to learn and play adaptive sports so no one is left watching from the sidelines. Adaptive sports are for everyone!
