About

It has been inspiring to see the outpouring of generosity from our Mathematics community as we launch the new Mel Hochster Research and Mentoring Award. Thank you for your supporting this important cause.

It's not too late to be a part of it! Gifts will continue to be matched 2:1 while match funds remain. You can make a gift on the main U-M giving site by clicking here.

We’re honoring the extraordinary legacy of Professor Melvin Hochster, Jack E. McLaughlin Distinguished University Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the University of Michigan. As one of the most prolific commutative algebraists of our time, Mel has shaped the global mathematical landscape and helped establish Michigan as a world leader in mathematics.

Throughout his career, Mel has inspired groundbreaking research while mentoring generations of mathematicians. He nurtured over 50 PhD students, 20 postdocs, and countless undergraduates—and attracted top talent from around the world— transforming Michigan into a vibrant hub for commutative algebra. Even in retirement, he remains active in research and continues to inspire both his students and their students—and innumerable others— across the globe.

For nearly five decades, Mel shaped the culture of our department with his spirit of excellence, curiosity, kindness, and joy. His presence helped make–-and continues to make–- the Michigan Math Department the special community it is today.

To celebrate Mel’s profound impact as a scholar and mentor, we are proud to launch the Mel Hochster Research and Mentoring Award. This new fund will support outstanding professors who exemplify Mel’s dedication to research excellence and mentorship. This will help us retain and invest in our best professors.

All donations will be matched 2:1, tripling the impact for award recipients and their research groups, including seminar funding, professional development, and mentee support.

Help us honor Mel and invest in the future of mathematics at Michigan!

With your gift, we can ensure that Mel’s dedication to nurturing talent and advancing mathematics will inspire and empower new generations of researchers for years to come.

*Contributions will be added to an existing endowed fund, and distributions from the Fund will be made in accordance with the University’s then existing endowment distribution policy and used and administered as provided in the documents establishing the Fund.
