About

Thank you for visiting this page. Matt and Heather appreciate your gift in memory of Fred and would also be delighted if you would share a story or kind word below. Gifts in memory of Fred will help patients living with Lewy Body Dementia as well as improving awareness of the disease among health care professionals. Fred's sense of humor and genial personality made him a favorite patient at Brookdale Senior Living in Ann Arbor where he was able to be close to family as well.

-----Obituary-----

Frederic Oonk formerly of Midland, MI passed away peacefully on Monday, June 30, 2025 in Ann Arbor, MI. Fred was born December 10, 1938 in Sheboygan, WI to Melvin and Helen (Dulmes) Oonk and was raised in the small town of Oostburg, WI. His childhood was full of baseball in the park, summer days at the family cottage on Lake Michigan and time spent with family and friends. After Oostburg High School, Fred attended the University of Wisconsin where he graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering. In 1963, he moved to Midland to work for Dow Corning where he met Alice Hammer. They were married October 16, 1965 and she predeceased him in 2020.

Fred’s 32 year career at Dow Corning took Alice and Fred to Kentucky, Wales, and Belgium with time in Midland in between. He retired in 1995. In retirement they also travelled to Australia, Alaska and made regular trips all around the US to visit friends and family

Fred was known as a positive spirit, quick with pun or a joke. He enjoyed travelling, reading history books, golfing, playing cards, bowling, playing softball, and watching sports.

He is survived by his children, Heather Oonk of Solana Beach, CA and Matthew (Angela) Oonk of Ann Arbor, MI; grandchildren, Elsa and Jo; sister Nancy Doeden, brother Rodney (Barbara); and many nieces, nephews and friends
