Dr. Raoul Kopelman Fellowship Fund

About

Thank you for supporting the Dr. Raoul Kopelman Fellowship Fund. In addition to a memorial donation, Kopelman Colleagues and former Kopelman Lab Students are invited to write a brief comment as a personal testimonial about Raoul Kopelman’s mentoring style and collaborative approach to scientific innovation; everyone is welcome to write a message below. Thank you for making a memorial gift: two anonymous donors, close colleagues and friends of Raoul, pledged to match the first gift of $1,080 and the first gift of $3,600. We appreciate your generosity.

Dr. Raoul Kopelman Fellowship Fund This graduate student fellowship is established in honor of Dr. Raoul Kopelman and the high societal impact of his pioneering research, which covered a wide spectrum of nanoscience, from nanochemistry to nanomedicine. In January of 2023, Kopelman introduced a new graduate-level course he developed, titled “NanoChemistry: Implications for NanoMedicine, NanoTechnology and Climate NanoScience.” The course inspired multidisciplinary thinking and negotiating scientific innovation to better the world around us by preparing graduate students for working, conducting research, and teaching in the new “NanoWorld".

This fellowship will continue to steward Kopelman's scientific vision for multidisciplinary impact. The Dr. Raoul Kopelman Fellowship Fund will be used to support Rackham graduate students conducting research in the nanosciences, with a preference for postdoctoral fellows. This includes students from disciplines such as chemistry, physics, bioengineering, and biomedicine with a passion to think integratively beyond disciplinary boundaries in the development of high-impact nanoscience in domains such as health and medicine, technology, energy, and the environment.

One Mentor’s Incredibly Fantastic Voyage If you were Dr. Kopelman’s colleague or student (undergraduate, graduate or postgraduate), we invite you to add a 2-3 sentence personal testimonial about Raoul’s mentoring style in the format of a comment at the end of the article published in Michigan Today on Oct. 18, 2024: https://michigantoday.umich.edu/2024/10/18/one-mentors-incredibly-fantastic-voyage/

Community of Scholars, Family, and Friends To offer a matching pledge or brainstorm creative ways to reach our fundraising goal, please do not hesitate to contact Prof. Shirli Kopelman, Raoul’s daughter and colleague at the University of Michigan (shirli@umich.edu), who initiated this fellowship fund in his honor. Raoul Kopelman appreciated donations in multiples of 18 (reflects the concept of life). Every donation helps: $18; $36; $180; $360; $3,600; $18,000; $36,000; $180,000. Currently, two donors pledged to match the first gift of $1,080 and the first gift of $3,600. Go Blue! We greatly appreciate your generosity in collectively building this fellowship for future generations of scholars.

If you are donating by check, please make it payable to the University of Michigan, note “Fund 702813 Kopelman” on it, and mail it to: U-M Gift and Records Administration, 3003 South State Street Suite 8000, Ann Arbor, MI 48109. The EIN is 38-600630.

If you would like to make your tax-deductible donation before December 31 please call U-M Gifts and Records at 888-518-7888 (Mon-Fri, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. ET). Please be sure to mention that your gift is meant for “Fund 702813 Kopelman” or you can make a donation online. Click on Make a Memorial Gift.

Please Note: Gifts to endowed funds will be administered as permanent endowment under Michigan law and University policies; excess distributions may be added to the principal for reinvestment or used later for the purpose(s) for which the fund was established.
