Beat Ohio State. Fight Student Hunger.
Help us raise funds for the Maize & Blue Cupboard and beat Ohio State!
The Maize & Blue Cupboard is a lifeline for the University of Michigan community and now, Wolverines have another reason to rally behind it. By challenging Ohio State, we can show the strength of the Maize and Blue while ensuring that U-M students have access to nutritious food, essential household supplies, and the resources to prepare healthy meals, regardless of their financial circumstances.
Last fiscal year, the Maize & Blue Cupboard supported 26,000 shopping visits, making a meaningful difference in students’ lives. Together, we can beat Ohio State and help meet a critical need on our campus.
The challenge is real
- One in three U-M students experiences food insecurity.
- About 10% of students—roughly 5,000 Wolverines—may go without food for an entire day because they cannot afford it.
- Hunger can negatively affect academic performance and lower students’ grade point averages.
- Limited access to nutritious food can contribute to poor health outcomes.
- Students from vulnerable populations face an even greater risk.
The Maize & Blue Cupboard’s impact extends far beyond the food on its shelves. Its educational programs help students learn how to budget for groceries, prepare nutritious meals, and make informed decisions about their health and finances. These practical skills support students throughout their time at Michigan and prepare them for independent adulthood.
By helping students build a strong foundation for managing their households, nutrition, and finances, the Cupboard sets students up for success in their personal and professional lives.
Help Michigan beat Ohio State
Your gift counts toward our challenge against Ohio State while supporting the Maize & Blue Cupboard’s food distribution services, educational programs, and essential resources for students in need.
If you'd prefer to donate goods - The Maize & Blue Cupboard will be accepting donations during all shopping hours and has additional donation hours Mondays and Tuesdays 7:30am-10am for the month of November
Contributions do more than stock the shelves. They also support cooking demonstrations, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) assistance, mobile food distributions, and connections to financial aid and well-being services. These programs empower students to manage their nutritional and financial resources more effectively.
With your support, the Maize & Blue Cupboard can continue providing:
- Food: Produce, dairy products, meat, bread, frozen foods, and shelf-stable staples such as rice, canned goods, and tuna.
- Household goods: Trash bags, toilet paper, cleaning supplies, hygiene products, and more.
- Kitchen and cooking items: Dishes, silverware, pots and pans, food-storage containers, cutting boards, knives, and other kitchenware.
- Programming and support: Chef demonstrations, mobile food distributions, financial-aid connections, well-being services, and assistance with programs such as SNAP.
Every gift helps Michigan move ahead in the competition—and helps ensure that no Wolverine has to choose between buying food and pursuing their education.
