Two great institutions come together each year on the eve of the UM | MSU Football game to honor one great person, Alex Powell, for one great cause—Alex’s Great State Race (AGSR), where ROTC cadets and adaptive athletes from UM and MSU join together to run / roll the 64-miles from Ann Arbor to East Lansing and present the home team with the game ball for the rivalry football game. The race celebrates the life of Alex Powell and both college's resources for students with disabilities, which Alex utilized during his short time as a student.
Many students with disabilities experience more barriers than students without disabilities while seeking higher education. University of Michigan Student Accessibility & Accommodation Services seeks to alleviate some of the financial barriers by offering a variety of scholarship opportunities. Donations to Alex's Great State Race go to the endowed fund created by the Alex Powell family, which ensures that there will always be funding at UM for students with disabilities who need financial support through the Alex's Great State Race Support Fund scholarship.
Contributions will be added to an existing endowed fund, and distributions from the Fund will be made in accordance with the University’s then-existing endowment distribution policy and used and administered as provided in the documents establishing the Fund.
