THE CHALLENGE
For many, Halloween means dressing up, walking door-to-door yelling “Trick or treat!”, and coming home with bags of candy that last until Thanksgiving. But for children with disabilities, Halloween can be filled with obstacles—like sensory overload, social anxiety, physical barriers, and dietary restrictions. For example, a child with autism who is nonverbal might not say “Trick or treat” and be left out. Children using wheelchairs or other mobility devices may be unable to navigate porch steps. Meanwhile, the noise and flashing lights of traditional Halloween displays can overwhelm kids with sensory sensitivities.
THE SOLUTION
Now in its fifth year, Inclusive Halloween transforms Halloween into a safe, supportive, and accessible celebration—one where kids with special needs and their families can enjoy the holiday together. The event offers sensory supports, accessible activities, and two different indoor trick-or-treat spaces: one “happy” area for those who prefer a gentler experience, and one “spooky” area with traditional Halloween decorations like ghosts and skeletons. Hosted on October 24 at UM-Flint’s Riverfront Conference Center (details below), the event also features a silent disco, arts and crafts, carnival games, a sensory room, and a resource fair from our community partners.
THE NEED
Inclusive Halloween grows each year and now welcomes more than 1,000 attendees and 300 volunteers. While generous local businesses offer support, additional funding is essential to provide dietary-friendly treats, food for families, and t-shirts for our volunteers. Every dollar helps!
- $100 provides candy for 50 kids
- $50 outfits five volunteers with t-shirts
- $25 supplies non-edible treats for 12 children with dietary restrictions
- $10 stocks snacks to keep our volunteers energized
THE IMPACT
Your donation to UM-Flint’s Inclusive Halloween 2025 brings the holiday within reach for every child, no matter their abilities. You help create an inclusive celebration where all children feel welcome, valued, and able to participate in the season’s traditions.
